Gangsta rap tops heroes on Wal-Mart black history shelf

Thursday, February 25, 2010
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. rejected for inclusion in its Black History Month displays "For Love of Liberty: The Story of America's Black Patriots," a four-hour documentary in which a Who's Who of Hollywood is enlisted to document the history of blacks in the military.

What did make it to the prominent displays at the world's largest retailer? "Thug Angel -- Tupac Shakur," a documentary of the slain rapper; the strip club-set flick "The Players Club," and Dave Chappelle's sketch comedy series "Chappelle's Show -- Season 2 Uncensored" were among 50 titles approved for the special promotion in entertainment sections.

"I think it was a slap in our face, as far as being war veterans," said Price, an African-American South Holland resident. "I would never buy anything out of Wal-Mart anymore."........ read more>>

Marriage hasn't changed anything: Shilpa

Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Mumbai, February 24: Actor Shilpa Shetty says marriage has not changed the dynamics of her acting career even one bit. In fact, she is quite excited about a project where she is required to do a body baring act — very much on the lines of what she did in Dostana — again.

“Marriage hasn’t changed anything. I would do a Dostana act once again. My father and husband are very encouraging. When I did Dostana, I was seeing Raj (Kundra) and he was whistling when he saw the number. Even my father is very open-minded. He says if you are showing your legs, show it well,” she tells After Hrs in an exclusive interview.

“I was an actor first before I became Raj’s wife and he knew how my profession was. But it is always important for you to draw the line and know where to stop. However, now I will only do a film that is really worthwhile. I do not have much time to waste,” Shilpa laughs......... read more>>

Kate Winslet Keeps Her Oscar in the Bathroom

Kate Winslet's Oscar is up for grabs – to anyone who visits her home.

Last year's Best Actress winner, for The Reader, keeps her golden statuette in the bathroom so guests "can sneakily have a little [hold] and put it back down again," she told the U.K. TV show GMTV on Monday.

Her reason for storing it there, she says, is "because basically everybody wants to touch it, everybody wants to hold it and go 'Oh, my gosh,' and 'How heavy is it?' So I figured if I put it [in there], then people can avoid the whole, 'Where's your Oscar?' thing."......... read more>>

LONDON - British health authorities have warned that contaminated heroin being sold in London may cause anthrax, after one addict was hospitalized with the potentially fatal disease.

The warning follows a similar outbreak in Scotland that has infected 19 heroin addicts since December, including nine deaths. Authorities suspect the heroin or an agent mixed with the drug was likely contaminated.

"All heroin in London carries the risk of anthrax contamination," said Brian McCloskey of London's Health Protection Agency.

Anthrax is a bacterial disease that can be treated with antibiotics if caught early........ read more>>

Controvery left me numb says SRK, refuses to apologise

Thursday, February 18, 2010
The 44-year-old superstar said that what hurt him the most was the fact that his "Indianness" was questioned again and again.

The actor said that he would have apologised to the Shiv Sena if it was the content of his film that they found offensive, but did not do so because he didn't understand the "logic" behind their anger.

"If they had a problem with my film, I would have apologised. I have done so earlier because I do not want to offend anyone with my films, my aim is to entertain. But this was about who I am as a person and my Indianness and I was hurt that I had to clarify it again and again," said Shahrukh in an interaction with Star News.

The Shiv Sena had launched an attack on the actor after he supported the inclusion of Pakistani players in the IPL and threatened to disrupt MNIK's release in Mumbai.

The actor was on a whirlwind world tour when the controversy escalated and lead to violence in Mumbai....... read more>>

Tight security as Khan film opens in Mumbai amid row

Saturday, February 13, 2010
(BBC) ---A Bollywood film featuring star Shah Rukh Khan has opened amid tight security in a few cinemas in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay).

More than 1,800 people have been arrested at protests against My Name is Khan, which will be shown at 63 venues.

Khan angered the hard line Hindu party, Shiv Sena, by saying he regretted that no Pakistani cricketers had been picked for next month's Indian Premier League.

Two small cinemas have already been attacked in Mumbai and posters burned.

Two small cinemas have already been attacked in Mumbai and posters burned.

Mumbai is regarded as the entertainment capital of India.

The BBC's Prachi Pinglay in Mumbai said that despite the threats, more than 30 theatres in the city were showing the film on Friday - mostly to packed houses.

At the Inox multiplex in south Mumbai all the evening shows were sold out.

Outside another cinema in Mumbai, one elderly couple asked a policemen if it was safe to see the movie before entering, our correspondent adds.

Himanshu Roy, a joint commissioner of police, said about 150 Shiv Sena supporters had hurled stones and tried to force their way into some theatres, but had been beaten back. Police made 49 arrests, he told The Associated Press.

Shah Rukh Khan has thanked his fans via the Twitter website for turning out in such large numbers to see the film.

'Nothing to fear'

One multiplex with a full house for the film left actress Pooja Bedi and her father, Kabir Bedi, without tickets.

"I am very happy that the film is getting a full house. Police are doing a fabulous job. People need not fear at all," Ms Bedi told reporters.

Authorities announced that 21,000 police officers were being deployed to protect cinemagoers, frisking patrons before entering. Night-vision cameras have also been used to spot troublemakers inside.

Despite the promise of protection, a number of cinema chains stopped taking advance bookings for My Name is Khan this week.

One cinemagoer in Mumbai told the AFP news agency that she found the controversy over Khan "alarming and disturbing".

"I'm not going to be deterred by these kind of threats," said the woman, who asked not to be named.

Khan, part-owner of Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders, spoke out last month after no players from Pakistan were selected for the IPL Twenty20 competition.

The 44-year-old Muslim has stood firm over his remarks, but apologised to his collaborators in My Name is Khan.

"I request everybody to leave the film alone and deal with what I have said as an individual," he told reporters in London last week.

In the film, Khan plays a Muslim with Asperger's syndrome whose life in the US changes after the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Shiv Sena, a regional party which backs the cause of Hindus in Maharashtra state, has pledged to continue its protests.

The organisation, often described as anti-Muslim, regards itself as a defender of what it sees as traditional Hindu moral values.

Khan is one of the biggest stars of India's film industry and has hosted the local version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

The eight-team IPL Twenty20 competition starts on 12 March and is staged over 45 days.
